Acholi Day 2016 Fundraising African Music Evening

When: Friday, 26 August 2016 from 19:00 to 22:30 (BST) Where: East Oxford Community Centre - 44 Princes Street Cowley, Oxford, OX4 1DD African Dance Oxford are happy to host this fundraising Music, Food & Dance Evening to raise funds for the popular 'ACHOLI DAY' ACHOLI DAY is a community event for all Which will take place on Saturday 27th August, same venue as Fundraising Event. It aims to explore & celebrate the rich and diverse cultural heritage of the Acholi people from Northern Uganda, (an East African tribe), in a fun and enjoyable way with lots of Audience Participation. There will be plenty of exciting activities on the day for all to enjoy. Saturday Event Programme includes traditional drumming, Nanga and Adungu (traditional instruments) various cultural dances, Acholi lifestyles, Acholi Riddles and Folktales, African style market stalls???, Acholi traditional performing artists, Fashion show with a twist and delicious African Food. Aimed at bringing the community together, the actual Acholi Day entry is by door donations. Funds raised during the Fundraising Music Food & Dance Evening will go towards meeting the running costs (850.00) of hosting the ACHOLI DAY FESTIVAL. Fundraising Music, Food & Dance Evening will treat you to some hand picked Local Artists/Musicians, Delicious African Food with an opportunity for you to enjoy drumming and dance after meal. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- To Donate (additional Funds) for Acholi Day visit BK.LUWO: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qBL9BTQgbKg BK LUWO is a Northern Ugandan refugee women's initiative, open to the wider community. BK LUWO help provide a safe and neutral learning environment for refugee and immigrant women of African descent, but open to anyone seeking support. We run two informal drop-in sessions where we share creative skills such as sewing, knitting, crochet and embroidery, storytelling, homeland language to preserve cultural heritage and computer skills. We also hold community and cultural events as a means of sharing and celebrating our rich heritage with the wider community. BK LUWO is different to other services as it offers culturally appropriate activities to a 'hard-to-reach' group, attracting participants in a relaxed way with a warm welcome and providing a learning space in a safe, mutually supportive atmosphere. New skills are learnt and existing skills are passed on. BK LUWO is a user-led community group that has a huge impact empowering its participants - improving mental and emotional health, confidence and self-worth, while bringing people together and breaking isolation.
